The I-80 Road Trip
In 2011, we set out to move me from Portland, Oregon to Ann Arbor, Michigan to earn my Masters in Architecture at the University of Michigan (not an option, really, but a requirement for my licensure). So what better excuse for a road trip?! This would be one of (3) cross-country adventures during my 2-year tenure in Ann Arbor while Brandon and Lola remained in Portland. This would also begin my evangelism for every American (if means allow) to traverse this immense continent via automobile.
So, we hit the road with the Kia towing a U-Haul with enough furniture to outfit a tiny studio apartment. And I, armed with an atlas, turn-by-turn directions (it’s hard to imagine I was even more OCD back then) and my trusty Fodor guidebook (one of my must-haves for National Park planning).
The “goal” was to visit Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park, but the adventure of the drive turned out to be just as spectacular. Driving over passes and through plains, old Western towns and the rolling hills of America’s heartland felt like a patriotic pilgrimage.
